| November, 2002 - Keeping College Football's Game Up When the Temperature Drops - -- Under Armour® Performance Apparel is Gear of Choice -- BALTIMORE - November 5, 2002 - As the temperature drops, college football teams from different parts of the country face entirely new sets of challenges when taking the field. Those who are familiar with warmer climes may find that cold fingers and hands don't grip the pigskin as easily, lungs burn with colder air, and muscles can cool down more quickly between plays. Even if a player is accustomed to the cold, exposure to a biting wind that makes 20 degrees feel like 20 below can wear just about anyone down over the course of four quarters. Teams from the north and the south cope with these temperature changes differently, but a strong defense that more than 100 Division 1A college teams agree upon is Under Armour® Performance Apparel. Under Armour's diverse line includes performance apparel for all seasons, climates and conditions, allowing the body to regulate its temperature naturally through the process of moisture transport. SOUTHERN PERSPECTIVE "Under Armour® ColdGear™ is the standard gear for our players when the temperature drops - on the road or here at home," commented Tom Conner, head equipment manager for Georgia Tech. "We don't want the players getting too warm or too bulked up in gear, and Under Armour® keeps our guys' body temperature regulated." According to Conner, if it gets really cold when they are on the road, the team will rent sideline heaters. Only two players on each team are permitted to wear buckled-on hand warming tubes, and on occasion players will keep chemically induced beanbag-like pouches, sometimes known as "hot hands," in their pocket to warm up between plays. "However, we don't want the players to get too warm because it will just make the cold feel that much worse when their bodies are readjusting. Regulating body temperature is the key," Conner said. NORTHERN EXPOSURE "This is the second year that we have been using Under Armour® AllSeason Gear™ to regulate the players' body temperature, and we're especially glad to have it this season because it's been colder this fall than in the past seven years that I've been here" commented Mark Peeler, head equipment manager at University of Wisconsin. "A lot of it is mental for our players, and we find that performance is dependent on response to the cold. If you start complaining that it's too cold early in the season, that's going to affect the players' mentality on the field as we get into the colder months. But if you prepare the guys to pay attention to their game no matter what the conditions, you create stronger players." According to Peeler, overcoats are available on the sidelines, along with muff hand warmers. Players also have the option to use hand warmer pockets which repel moisture and have a zip pocket. "During the game, we don't want the players to be wearing too much clothing, because that can slow them down and bulk them up with excess weight. Under Armour® provides temperature regulation with a snug fit that competitors can't grab on to during the game," said Peeler. BASICS OF THE GEAR Under Armour® is the originator of performance apparel, a line of moisture "wicking" microfiber clothing that pulls perspiration away from the skin to keep athletes cool, dry and light throughout the course of a game, practice or workout. Most of the products are compression garments that help prevent muscle fatigue while working out. College equipment managers and teams and players of all levels and abilities can benefit from ColdGear™ in cold conditions; HeatGear™ when the temperature rises; AllSeasonGear™ for flexibility when the temperature changes; TurfGear™ for protection against artificial surfaces; LooseGear™ for the moisture transport functionality with a looser fit; and StreetGear™ for fashion off the playing field. Head equipment managers from a variety of regions are available for comment. A full roster of colleges and universities that are supplied with Under Armour® is available.
